One single alloy steel rod keeps your toggle plate in place. When it breaks, your whole crusher stops. When discussing jaw crusher parts, most attention goes to jaw plates, cheek plates, and jaw crusher toggle plate. However, a small but vital component, the return rod or tension rod, is crucial for keeping the entire crushing mechanism intact.
What Does the Return Rod DoThe return rod maintains constant contact between the pitman and the movable toggle plate, reducing impact wear. Each jaw crusher uses one rod, forged from high-strength alloy steel and heat-treated for strength and toughness. It works with a compression spring that pushes the toggle plate back after each stroke. Without proper tension, the toggle plate can slip, causing sudden crusher stoppage while the flywheel spins – a clear sign that the tension mechanism needs inspection.

Most Common Failure ModesThe return rod operates under repetitive tension cycles, making it a sacrificial component designed to withstand thousands of load cycles before eventually fatiguing. The most frequent failure is a bent or fractured rod. When the rod breaks, the tension spring loses its preload, allowing the toggle plate to shift or fall completely out of its seat. A worn or weakened spring can also cause rod failure, as increased dynamic loads elevate the risk of fracture. Both scenarios result in unplanned shutdown and immediate replacement.
ONA Return Rods Engineered for ReliabilityONA manufactures replacement return rods from high-strength forged alloy steel, precision threaded to match original specifications. Each rod is 100 percent dimensionally inspected and coated with anti-rust oil. For operators who prefer a full tension mechanism set, ONA offers return rods together with matching tension springs, spring seats, and adjusting nuts as complete kits.ONA return rods are suitable for a wide range of suit to Metso crusher parts and suit to jaw crusher parts, including suit to Nordberg C Series, suit to Metso, and other OEM and aftermarket equipment. Whether you need a standard replacement or a custom rod from your drawing, contact ONA with your model or part number for a quote.
