Using Guide
Step 1: Safety First - Personal Protective Equipment
Crusher backing compounds are chemical products. Protect yourself:
· Safety Glasses or Goggles: Protect from splashes.
· Chemical-Resistant Gloves: Nitrile or neoprene are best.
· Long Sleeves and Pants: Protect skin from contact.
· Respirator: Especially if working in a poorly ventilated area to avoid fume inhalation.
Step 2: Preparation
1. Clean the Manganese Liners and Crusher Bowl/Head:
· Remove all old backing material, dirt, grease, oil, and moisture from MN18CR2 crusher parts. This is non-negotiable. Contaminants prevent proper adhesion.
· Use a scraper, wire brush, or needle gun for removal. For stubborn old epoxy, careful use of a propane torch can help soften it, but avoid overheating the manganese.
· Solvent Wash: After mechanical cleaning, wipe all surfaces with a degreasing solvent (like acetone). Ensure the solvent is completely evaporated before proceeding. The metal must be clean, dry, and warm.
2. Assemble and Position the Liners:
· Place the new manganese liners into the crusher head or bowl.
· Ensure they are seated correctly and evenly. There should be a consistent gap between the liner and the crusher body for the backing to fill.
Step 3: Mixing the Compound
1. Use the Right Amount: Calculate the volume needed based on the cavity size. Mix only what you can use within the pot life (the working time after mixing).
2. Mix Thoroughly: Most products are two-part (Resin and Hardener).
· Pour the entire contents of both containers into a clean, durable mixing pail.
· Mix for 3-5 minutes.
· Scrape the sides and bottom of the pail several times during mixing to ensure no unmixed material is left. Incomplete mixing results in a failed cure.
· The mixed product should be a completely uniform color with no streaks.
Step 4: Application and Pouring
1. Work Quickly: You have a limited pot life (typically 10-20 minutes at 73°F/23°C). Have everything ready before you start mixing.
2. Pouring Technique:
· Start pouring the mixed compound into the backing cavity from the BOTTOM UP.
· Pour in a continuous stream to avoid trapping air bubbles.
· Pour at one point and let the compound naturally flow and fill the cavity. Avoid moving the pour point around excessively.
3. Fill Level: Fill the cavity until the compound is level with the top of the crusher body or just to the bottom of the liner's edge. It will not overflow if calculated correctly.
Step 5: Curing
1. Do Not Disturb: Once poured, leave the crusher completely untouched for the full cure time specified by the manufacturer.
2. Cure Time vs. Temperature: Cure time is highly temperature-dependent.
· At 75°F (24°C), it may take 4-8 hours to become tack-free and 12-24 hours to fully cure before crushing rock.
· At 50°F (10°C), the cure time could be doubled or tripled. This is why warming the parts is so crucial.
3. When is it Ready? The crusher should not be put back into service until the compound has fully cured to its specified compressive strength.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
· Mixing Incorrectly: Inadequate mixing is the #1 cause of failure.
· Poor Preparation: Applying backing over dirt, grease, or old material.
· Applying to Cold Surfaces: This causes poor flow and incomplete curing.
· Misjudging Pot Life: Mixing too much compound and having it harden in the pail.
· Rushing the Cure: Starting the crusher before the backing is fully cured. This will compromise the entire installation and can lead to liner movement and failure.
